In Alberta, the terms “therapist,” “counsellor,” and “coach” are unregulated. This means that technically, anyone can refer to themselves using these terms, without a certain level of education and experience.
So how can you be sure your therapist is qualified? The first step is to understand the designations that are regulated, and the associations that grant these titles. The following are protected, regulated, titles:
Registered Psychologist (R. Psych)
Psychologists in Alberta must register with the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP). This requires completion of a bachelor’s and master’s degree, with strict requirements about courses, instructors, and practical experience. Those applying must also complete 1600 hours of supervised practice, and two large exams regarding ethics and knowledge.
Registered Social Worker (RSW)
Social workers often apply their skills and knowledge in the community, assisting with housing, employment, families, and much more. It is a broad field, and registered social workers are also qualified to provide therapeutic services. They are regulated by the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW). To register, applicants must have a minimum of a bachelor’s in social work from an approved institution, followed by at least 1000 hours of supervised practice. Social workers must also pass a licensing examination.
Provisional Psychologist/Social Worker
The CAP and ACSW also protect the title of “Provisional Psychologist” and “Provisional Social Worker.” Provisional means that the individual has completed all required schooling, and is now working through their supervised practice hours. This ensures that while individuals complete their designation, they have the proper education and qualified supervisor to provide ethical care.
What About Clinical Counsellors?
Technically, in Alberta, “counsellors” are not a protected title. However, there are still many professionals who are qualified to provide therapeutic services.
Though not a regulatory body, the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association grants certifications to qualified individuals. They must complete similar requirements to the Psychologist designation, such as a graduate degree and a set amount of supervised practice. Many professionals receive this certification while working towards others (such as registered psychologist) so they can still provide care.
If a counsellor has this certification, they are likely reliable and qualified.
Can I Trust Interns?
Many companies employ interns and students. Typically, interns are working through the practicum requirement of their degree.
They have gone through all required schooling, and have done extensive practice with practical skills. Those who supervise students also have specific requirements, such as registration with CAP and practicing for at least five years.
Students and supervisors regularly communicate to ensure that clients are receiving the best possible care. As an added bonus, interns often offer reduced rates, providing a more affordable option.
