31 Self Care Activities for Mental Health Awareness Month

May is mental health awareness month, a time to learn about mental wellness strategies and impacts. To participate, we’ve compiled a list of one activity to do each day of the month!


1 – Write 5 things you are grateful for in your phone, in a journal, or just on the nearest sticky note!

2 – Go outside for more than ten minutes. This can be on a walk, a run, or sitting on your front step/balcony. 

3 – Do a hobby for an hour that doesn’t involve a screen. Try reading, colouring, crocheting, yoga, writing, or anything else!

4 – Call a friend or family member. 

5 – Watch your favourite movie. 

6 – Spend the first hour of the morning not checking any notifications. This includes news, emails, texts, etc. 

7 – Do a 5 minute mindfulness meditation. 

8 – Try something new! This could be a new food, activity, chatting with a stranger, going to a new place…

9 – Do one kind thing for yourself. For example, some self-care, buy yourself a coffee, make a fancy dinner.

10 – Go to bed one hour earlier than you normally do.

11 – Write 5 goals you have for yourself.

12 – Stay off social media today.

13 – Do something you loved as a child. Think climbing trees, rolling down hills, playing with dolls, and so on.

14 – Spend five minutes tidying your living space.

15 – Move your body.

16 – Drink 5 full glasses (or more) of water today!

17 – Repeat an affirmation to yourself 5 times. Some common ones are “I am capable,” “I am strong,” “I am kind.” Whatever resonates with you!

18 – Listen to the happiest song you can think of. 

19 – Take a picture of something beautiful.

20 – Romanticize your space. Light a candle, hang up a new picture, get cozy with a blanket.

21 – Write 5 of your strengths.

22 – Face one fear today!

23 – Schedule that appointment you’ve been putting off (or reply to that email). 

24 – Practice mindful breathing.

25 – Research something you’re interested in.

26 – Do something kind for someone else. 

27 – Take a five minute dance break. 

28 – Add some fruits and veggies to your day.

29 – Laugh at something! It can be a quick comedy clip, funny movie, look up jokes, etc. 

30 – Reflect on the activities from the month that made you feel your best.
