How Therapy Can Improve Relationships (Even if Your Partner Isn’t Involved)

While therapy has many benefits to individual well-being, it can improve relationships as well. Whether or not you attend with your partner, the skills learned from counselling can have a butterfly effect towards others in your life. How does this work?

Therapists can help you identify triggers and problematic patterns. If there’s a certain topic that tends to repeatedly come up between you and your partner, there may be an underlying trigger behind it. Perhaps you find yourself becoming more upset than you’d like in a specific situation, such as a confrontation. Knowing why these feelings arise and having strategies to handle them can help you and your partner connect on a deeper level.

In tandem with communication comes the ability to set boundaries. Healthy boundaries are an important aspect of any relationship, whether it be with family, friends, a partner or work. Understanding how to not only set, but maintain boundaries can increase self-esteem and self-security. While we cannot control how others act towards us, boundaries allow us to control our response.

Communication can be a struggle for everybody, whether you’ve been together for a month or a decade. It’s important to understand how to listen before responding, and validate before defending. Therapy can provide strategies to help calm the nervous system and be present in conversations. Additionally, you can learn to better advocate for your needs respectfully.

A healthy partnership encourages both partners to grow and learn together. By working on yourself, you could inspire your partner to do the same. Participating in counselling, also decreases the stigma surrounding seeking help.

Therapy, in general, can improve quality of life, boosting mood and your ability to be present with your partner. It provides a safe space to vent and process emotions outside your partnership. Supporting each other through struggles will always be part of relationships, and it’s okay to lean on your significant other! However, having your own support system helps you avoid becoming overly dependent on one person.

If you’re looking to take this step towards bettering your relationship, book a session with one of our counsellors here.
